Blue lotus flower on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A stylised lotus flower with layered, pointed petals sits on the upper shoulder and shoulder blade area. The petals are outlined in dark black linework and shaded with flat blue, lilac and pale grey tones, with a light highlight on the central petal. The lotus is centred on the skin against a soft, neutral background, with a dark strap visible at the bottom edge.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's only good for the front row. You'll have heard of Hollin Keep, where the north wall came down in the storm of my grandmother's time and took half the chapel with it. Nobody went near the moat after that. The water there was black as a boot and stank of old iron.

But Agnes Crewe went down there anyway, the spring her husband sailed for Riga and didn't come back. She carried a bucket, a knife and a heel of bread, because she meant to sit the night out and see what the water would do. On the third morning she came up the bank with her skirts soaked to the knee and something cupped in her two hands. A lotus, blue as a jay's wing, its petals folded tight over a drop of light, like a candle inside a shuttered lantern.

She set it in the cracked font of the chapel, and every morning after that the petals opened a little further, layer on layer, lilac at the edges and pale grey at the heart where the light sat. People came up the hill to look. Some brought lamps and some brought grief, and the flower took both without complaint.

Here is the part I never tell in daylight. When Agnes finally opened the last petal, the drop of light rolled out onto her palm and slid back down the bank into the moat. That same evening her husband, who had not drowned at all, walked up the road with a sack over one shoulder. He never asked where she'd been, and she never asked where the light had gone. Keep your lamp lit, and mind the wall.
