Three lotus flowers on a upper back

Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo

Three lotus flowers in red and pink overlap in a cluster on the upper back, with yellow stamens at their centres. The petals are shaded with darker red and deep maroon along their edges, giving them volume against the pale skin. The design sits diagonally across the shoulder blade, with the top of the woman's head and shoulder cropped at the top left of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy Lamb had the trowel in one hand and a jam jar of black peat water in the other when the first pink bloom came up through the drain silt. Nobody on the Hundred Foot had seen a lotus since the eighteen-hundreds, and the county men had long since written the mere off as a field of rushes and sour grass.

She had found the seeds on the Tuesday, hard and grey as shot, in a layer the digger had cut open below the old sluice. Her grandfather used to say the water remembered everything. He had kept a notebook of herons and eels and the date the last bittern boomed, and she had inherited the notebook along with his bad knee. Under his final entry, in pencil, he had written only: ask Mr Ashdown about the lilies.

Mr Ashdown was dead, so she planted the seeds in a tin bath on the windowsill of the pump house and talked to them the way she talked to the cat. Nothing happened for a month. Then a pale green fist unfolded above the water, and the petals came in layers, three of them, one after another, as if each had been waiting its turn to be seen.

The pump house had no electricity. She carried the bath out at dusk, and the red had deepened at the rims in the low light, the colour of the inside of a plum, while the centres held a yellow like crushed pollen. She sat on the step with her knee stretched out and watched the flowers lean towards the last of the sun. She left the notebook shut on the step beside her, and the lilies kept opening.
