Lotus flower with infinity stem
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A lotus flower in black outline sits above a stem that forms an infinity loop and curls at the base. The petals have soft pink-mauve shading inside the black linework, which contrasts with the solid black stem. The design is centred on bare skin with plain background, and the close framing shows the fine, even lines clearly.

Dear Tom, The lotus in the council pond finally opened on Tuesday, a full week after the frost went off the reeds. Mrs Abbott from the post office brought her knitting down to see it, and she said it looked like someone had drawn it in pen and forgotten to colour it in. I told her the water was doing that, not the flower. You always said I would argue with a kettle.

The bulb came from a seed merchant in Spalding who swore it had travelled over from Ceylon in a crate of tea tins. I planted it in the mud beside the iron railing, where the stem could go down and round on itself the way roots wind when there is nothing to hold them. Dad would have laughed at me spending a Sunday on a plant that only lasts a summer, but he would have stayed to watch it open.
Here is the odd part. Last Thursday the stem had doubled back under the surface and made a loop, a figure of eight lying on its side, and at the bottom a curl like the end of a violin scroll. I photographed it with the Brownie your wife gave me. I don't know whether the camera saw what I saw. I only know I stood there until the lamplighter came round and asked if I was waiting for a bus.
I've written all this down so you'll know it isn't the drink talking. If you come home at Easter, we'll walk down together and you can tell me whether a loop can still be a loop when it never seems to end. Bring the good secateurs. The railing needs cutting back before the next flower comes. Your brother, Frank
