Colour lotus flower with swirls on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A lotus flower with layered petals in orange, pink and purple sits centrally, with a yellow-dotted centre. Black outlines and curling tendrils with teardrop ends extend above and below the bloom. The shading is soft within each petal, and the design sits alone against plain, lightly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pond behind Hollin Mill had gone to cracked mud in the long drought, and when the rain came back the week before the wedding, the water rose brown and then clear, and in the middle of it, pushing up through the reeds, stood a single lotus that nobody in the village had planted. Old Ada Quiller came down with her basket to look at it and said the pond had a claim on the Hollin girls, and that the bride would have to pay her toll before the bells rang.

Maud had never been one for tolls. She walked down at dusk in her plain linen, carrying the slate she had written her childhood name on when she was seven, and she knelt on the wet stones and waited. The water curled in little ribbons, like the ribbons on the cart that would take her to the church. Then the petals began to open, orange at the base, pink in the middle, bruised purple at the tips, and the yellow seeds in the heart of the flower caught the last light like scattered coins.

She did not feel brave. She felt foolish, holding a slate to a flower. But she set it on the water and watched the chalk letters soften and lift away, and the lotus unfolded wider than it had ever seemed able to.

Teodor found her there, his boots soaked to the ankle, and asked if she had lost something. She said no. She said she had given it away, and that was the point. When they walked back up the lane, the guests were already dancing, and Ada Quiller stopped them at the gate, took Maud's hand, and turned it over. A single bead of pond water sat on her wrist, cool and clear, and it did not run.
