Blue lotus tattoo on a wrist

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A blue lotus flower with layered petals sits across the wrist, with green outlined vines curling out from either side. The petals use soft blue and turquoise shading with darker blue edges, and the green linework is bold and even. The subject is centred on the wrist against plain skin, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Snow had shut the Carrow Pass for nine days when Edith Hollin went down to the cellar for the last barrel of perry and found the water butt frozen solid except for one round hole the size of a plate. In the hole sat something blue.

The travellers in the taproom would not believe it until Tomas, the carter with the cracked boots, broke the ice with his heel and lifted out a bloom the colour of a kingfisher's back. Its petals lay in layers like folded silk, and where they met the stem, green vines curled outward as if reaching for the rafters. Nobody had planted anything in that butt since Edith's grandfather died. Old Gilda by the hearth said a lotus opens when it is warm and closes when it is cold, and that this one had waited under the frost for someone who needed it to open.

They set it in a jug on the windowsill. By morning it had closed tight and the water had gone black. Edith tried warm wine, then milk, then a pinch of salt from the kitchen crock, and still it stayed shut. The men began to grumble about the cold and the wasted day.

Then the wind dropped and the sun came low over the ridge. The bloom opened slowly along the sill, petals catching the light, and the vines crept over the wooden frame toward the glass. When the carter left on the third morning, the pass was clear and the road ran white and empty ahead of him. Edith found one green curl wound tight round the cellar hatch, and it was still warm to the touch.
