Pink lotus flower on upper back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A pink lotus flower in full bloom with a yellow centre sits at the top of the design, with a long green stem curving down and out of view. Petals are outlined in dark red and shaded with soft grey and white highlights, and grey shading behind the stem suggests depth. The composition is centred on the flower, with the stem leading the eye down across the skin.

The lotus opened on the third night of the heatwave, and by the time Bernard Pyle came down the glasshouse steps with his torch, its petals had already folded back like the lids of a tired eye. He stood on the wet tiles and counted the bloom out of habit, the way he counted the sluice gates before the pump men came. Four petals pink as boiled sweets, a fifth just lifting, and at the heart a cup of butter-yellow stamens that caught the torchlight.

Nobody had planted it. The pond had been drained in March for the new pipework, and the contractor's lad swore the bulb was dead. Bernard had kept the place forty years, through two floods and a fire in the potting shed, and he knew a thing that should not be growing when he saw one. Its stem ran down into the black water and out of the lamplight, thick and green as a rope, and when he crouched to follow it he found the grey silt where the old channel used to run, cut through by something that had come up from the culvert under Station Road.
He thought of his wife, who had wanted a lotus and been told it would never take in Ashby. He thought of ringing the council, then of the form he would have to fill in. Instead he sat on the upturned bucket and watched the flower, which seemed to be watching him back, until the first milk-coloured light came through the roof panes.
By morning the bloom had closed a little, as if it had heard the postman's whistle, and the stem had slipped back under the water with no sign of where it went. Bernard unlocked the gate for the school party at nine. He told the children only that the pond was quiet, and pinned the notice about keeping off the edge back on the gate, though he left the padlock hanging open.
