Watercolour lotus flower on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A lotus flower with outlined petals and a small cluster of stamens at its centre fills the frame, shown on a forearm. Black linework defines the petals, while soft pink, purple and blue watercolour-like washes and splashes fill and surround the design. The flower is centred on the arm against a plain background of skin and dark clothing at the edges.

The tarn sat just below the saddle of the pass, a sheet of grey water nobody in the valley thought worth a detour. Her grandfather had called it the pond of the forgotten bells. In late August the lotus opened there anyway, pale pink flowers standing on the surface like lamps, and the light came off the cliffs in violet and blue so that every bloom looked washed in the sky's leftover paint.

She reached it at dusk with the last mule, a grey called Tolly who refused the final scree. She sat on a rock and fed him a heel of bread while the water went the colour of plums. One lotus had its petals half closed, sealed around a small gold hush of stamens, and she thought it looked like a letter nobody had finished writing.

She broke one stem, not the whole flower, and tucked it inside the ledger where the salt weights were logged. In the morning the pass was clear, the mules were nine, and the ledger said ten, because she had written the flower in as cargo. Her grandfather would have laughed. She went down the far side with the bloom in her coat, and at every bend she unfolded it a little more, the way the pond had.
