Black ink script lettering reading Blue Neighbourhood, drawn by a hand holding a pen on white paper, shown as a lettering design rather than a tattoo on skin.

Blue Neighbourhood script lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A hand holds a pen and draws the words Blue Neighbourhood in flowing, brush-style script on pale paper. The strokes are bold and tapered with heavy downstrokes and thinner joins, and the lettering slopes upwards from left to right. The image is black and white, with the paper and pen work kept simple and uncluttered.

The snow had come in sideways since noon, and by the time you reached the top of the moor road the inn was only a lamp and a rumour of wood smoke. Mrs Askew met you in the porch with a pot of size and a sable brush tucked behind one ear. 'Sign's come down in the gale,' she said. 'Blue Neighbourhood, every letter of it, and nobody in three parishes can read the old hand anymore.'

The board lay across two trestles in the taproom, the paint cracked where the wood had flexed. You had learned your strokes in a Leeds signwriter's back room, so you knew the trick of it: heavy on the downstroke, a lift on the join, the whole line leaning uphill as if it meant to climb out of the frame. The B was the hard part. Her husband had drawn it with a loop like a swallowed bird, and the loop had split clean through.

You worked until the lamp oil ran low, the fire ticking, the snow pressing soft against the shutters. Near midnight the B came right under your brush, and Mrs Askew, who had said nothing all evening, pulled the cork from a bottle of something brown and poured two thimbles.

By morning the board was drying on the wall above the door, the wet letters catching the thin white light off the moor. She stood beneath it, squinting. 'He'd have liked the join on the N,' she said, and that was all the thanks you got, and all you needed.
