The sea took the causeway on the third night of the spring tides, and by morning the only dry ground left on Hollin was the top step of the chapel. Old Brannagh stood on it with a tin box under one arm and her grandson's hand in the other, and she would not be moved.

Her man had gone out for the cod in a blow and never come back, and she had kept his letters in that tin for forty years. They were written in pencil on the backs of shipping forms, and each one ended with the same words he had copied from the priest's book and could never spell without help: many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. She had read them so often the creases had worn through.

The flood rose past the chapel door and the boy began to cry. Brannagh opened the tin, took the letters out one by one, and tucked each into his coat. 'Take these up the hill,' she said. 'Paper dries and love waits.' He ran up through the gorse with the pages crackling against his ribs, and when the water dropped at the next full moon he found her still on the step, the tin empty beside her, her face turned to the sea as if she were expecting a reply.
