"Mind the third step, it has been waiting since before my grandmother's time to take a foot off somebody," said Old Tamsin, lifting her lamp so the children could see the stair spiralling up into the dark of Harrowgate Keep. "Hold the rail, Eli, and stop looking at the windows. The owl does not care for gawping."

The owl lived on the sill of the highest room, where the roof had gone and the night came through the gap as easily as a draught. Her name was Wenna. She had been the lady's bird until the lady took her silver and rode south to be married again, and Wenna had stayed, the way stone stays. Every evening she perched upright with her talons hooked over the rim of the old oval shield that had come down off the wall in the siege, and she kept watch over the sky pressed flat inside it, all those small white stars and the one orange moon.

Eli had counted the stars on the shield the summer before, when no one was looking, and he knew there were thirty-eight. He wanted to know whether they would come off on his fingers. So when the owl blinked her great round eyes and shifted her grip, he reached out, and the owl did not screech or flap. She only looked at him, and he understood she had seen every child who had ever climbed those stairs with a grab in mind.

Tamsin set bread crusts on the sill and said nothing. In the morning they came back up, and the sill was bare except for a single small star, cold and bright, lying on the stone where the owl had left it for him.
