Owl and key on the thigh

Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey owl tattoo sits on the thigh of a person wearing black shorts, with the face cropped out of frame. The owl has an ornamental chest with mandala-like patterning, and a key sits beneath it with a feather-like shape trailing below. The shading mixes fine detail with solid black areas, giving strong contrast against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

A salt merchant came one evening with his mules and a locked box he would not describe. He wanted water for the beasts and passage for himself, and he offered her a coin with a hole bored through it. The owl turned its head the full way round, the way owls do, and looked at the box for a long time. Then the woman lifted the key from the cord at her neck, a small iron thing with a loop worked like a rosette, and held it out to him. "Open it here," she said, "and tell me what is inside before you do."

He could not. The box was empty, and he had carried it for eleven years, through three droughts, believing it held his father's debt. A grey feather slipped from the owl's breast and landed on the lid, and the merchant went quiet. In the morning he left the box at the gate and walked on with his mules, lighter than he had come.

Word spread along the road that the gate-keeper's owl would ask what you were carrying, and that you had better know. Some people still take that road. Few of them stop to fill their skins, and the ones who do always leave something behind.
