Realistic owl on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large realistic owl with a detailed brown and grey feather pattern and bright teal eyes sits on the upper forearm. The owl is shaded with fine feather texture, and the background is filled with flat teal colour, dark branch-like lines and pale round dots. The two photos show the same forearm from slightly different angles against dark jeans and a dark top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl had kept the south tower of Harrowcombe since the last lord ran off with the bell rope and the church silver, and nobody in the valley cared to say who had let him. Each evening it came down from the broken battlements and sat on the lip of the cistern, where the rainwater lay green under the ivy, and it watched the village children throw pebbles at the moon's reflection until they went home.

Mags Tennant, who kept the mill, was the only one who spoke to it. She left a bowl of barley on the cistern wall every Michaelmas, and in return the owl told her where the ewes had strayed and which bend of the stream would flood before the spring rains. Nobody asked how it knew. The roots of the old hawthorn had split the chapel floor years ago, and its branches now reached through the empty window frames like black fingers.

In the hard winter the river froze, the miller's grandson went through the ice after a dropped pail. Mags ran to the castle with a lantern and found the owl already on the cistern lip, its eyes bright as lamps in the dark. It did not blink. It only turned its head toward the hole in the ice and then toward the hawthorn, and she understood she was meant to follow the branches.

She pulled the boy out with a bramble hook tied to the hawthorn's lowest limb. When she came back at dawn with him wrapped in her shawl, the barley bowl was empty and a single pale feather lay on the wall, round as a bubble of breath on still water.
