Blue pansies on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a cluster of blue and yellow pansies with a few green leaves and thin sprigs of foliage, arranged on the inner forearm. The petals are shaded from deep blue to pale cream, and the leaves and stems use dark outlines with soft green and grey tones. The flowers sit centrally on the arm, with the cropped photo showing the forearm against a blue knit sweater and a plain grey background.

Sit closer, the ones at the back, the lamp only has the one wick left and I'll not waste it on your squinting. You all know the pansy grows in the cracked terraces above the old reservoir, the one with the blue face and the yellow chin. My grandmother's grandmother said they were the last flowers the pre-flood gardeners bred for looking up at people. Nobody believes that now. Believe what you like.

Back when the drones still patrolled the salt roads, a girl called Ysolde Parr climbed the reservoir wall with a tin of seeds stitched into her collar. The guard at the gate had orders to burn anything green. She had a cough and a pocket full of wool, and she was very good at looking bored. She walked straight past him with her head down, the way you walk past a dog you are not afraid of, and tipped the tin into a crack where the rain collected.
Three summers went by and nothing came up. Then, one wet morning in the third spring, a clump of blue pushed through the rubble, five faces to a stem, and every face had a dab of cream at the throat as if someone had dipped a brush in milk and thought better of it. The guard came to pull them out himself. He knelt, looked at the nearest bloom, and found he could not do it. Its little upper petals were turned to the sky as though it had been waiting on him specifically.
So that is why the terraces are blue now, and why we still leave the first flower of each spring standing. Don't pick it. Ysolde is in the ground under it somewhere, and she would want you to look up for once.
