The sea wall went on the second night of January, and by morning the bottom field at Scarrow was a lake with the tops of the fence posts poking out like bad teeth. Dad would have sworn at the council and then gone out in his wellies anyway. I went out instead, with a torch and the dog, who refused to go within ten yards of the water.

Whatever the flood had brought in, it had left a skin of ice over the ditch by the gate, and that ice was full of bubbles, hundreds of them, each one a small round lens holding a little piece of my torch. When the light hit them they went blue, then white, then blue again, layered like coins under glass. I crouched there and counted until my knees ached. Some circles overlapped, some looped round each other, and where they gathered thickest I could make out a long shape: a back, a sweep of tail, a fin standing up out of the frost like a sail.

Tom rang at six from the garage in Wells to ask whether the sea had reached the lane. I told him about the fin. He said I'd been at the cider again, which was fair, and asked if the hens were still laying. They were. I fed them, then went back out in the dark with a bucket of grain I didn't need to carry.

The ice cracked under the dog's weight just as the sky started to grey. The shape broke apart into a hundred separate bubbles that drifted off from the gate and slid under the ditch toward the sea. I stood there until my torch dimmed, then went in and put the kettle on, leaving the gate open behind me for whatever was passing through.
