Swirl-patterned sea turtle design
Colour · Flash
The image shows a sea turtle seen from above and at an angle, with its flippers spread. The body is filled with spiral and curl motifs, and the shell and limbs are divided into patterned sections with fine detail along the edges. It is a single dark blue ink tone on a plain light blue background, with the turtle centred and filling most of the frame.

Put another stick on, and hush, because the sea does not like being talked over. You have heard about the turtle that carried the boy out past the reef? No? Then listen, and I will tell it the way my grandmother told it, which is slower than the way I tell it.

Hemi was nine the summer the lagoon went flat as a plate and the fish stopped coming. His mother sent him down to the rocks at Kelo Point with a bucket and a warning. The old turtle, the one with the swirls worn into her back like the grain of driftwood, came up out of the shallows and looked at him with one eye, then the other, the way a man reads a letter he does not trust.
She did not speak. Turtles never do, whatever the fishermen say over their drinks. But she turned and swam, and Hemi, who had never once disobeyed his mother, followed her out past the breakers, past the place where the water goes from green to a blue so dark it seems to have no floor.
Here is the part my grandmother always stopped to pour water for. Every spiral on that shell is a current. Trace one with your finger and you learn which way the cold water runs beneath the warm. The turtle led Hemi round and round in a circle until he understood the pattern, and then she dived and showed him where the fish had gone: down into a cleft in the reef where the tide had been sleeping. He came home with a bucket so heavy he had to drag it, and his mother never asked how he knew. Some things, my grandmother said, you do not get told. You get shown, and then you have to carry the spiral with you.
