Howling wolf tribal design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised wolf head is shown in profile with its muzzle raised as if howling. The outline and interior detail are drawn in bold, solid black ink with flowing tribal-style shapes and small dot accents along the neck and jaw. The design is shown in black only on plain white paper, with the wolf filling most of the frame.

The barrier at Cold Mere Gap had stuck halfway up for three hours, and Ruth Ansell was the only one on the night shift who knew how to coax it. I held the torch and the flask and had no patience for either. Beyond the wire the valley ran black into the foothills, and somewhere up the slope a wolf started to call, long and rising, the note climbing until it broke into something like a question.

"That's the old pack," Ruth said, though there had been no sheep on that side since the mill closed. She had a theory about them. They came down to listen to paperwork. Any lorry with a doubtful manifest would get serenaded until the driver lost his nerve and turned for home. I laughed at her. Then a Lithuanian haulier, a boy with frost in his eyebrows, wound his window down and asked, very politely, whether the wolf was part of the crossing fee.
Ruth lifted the arm with one clean shove, the counterweight groaning like a ship at its moorings. The boy drove through without a word. She watched his tail lights shrink down the far side for a long time, then took a biro from her pocket and wrote something on the back of her hand: his plate, the hour, and a small dot beside them, the way you'd mark a debt.
"Why the dot?" I asked. She blew on her fingers and shrugged. "The wolf never howled for him. It was howling for whoever's riding in the cab with him, the one who isn't on the sheet." Up the slope the call came again, closer this time, low enough to set the wire humming between us.
