Swallow silhouette with swirl cutouts
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A solid blue swallow in flight, shown in side profile with its forked tail and two swept-back wings. White scrolling filigree and curled shapes are cut out of the wings and body, leaving a blue outline and dots at the head and tail. The flat single-colour fill and white negative space make this a clean, graphic design with no shading.

The last of the Pellow tents came down in Shepton the week the swallows left, and Mab Fenwick would not let the old ring-master's boy take the pole with them. The swallows had nested in the rigging of the big top every summer for as long as anyone could say, twenty mud cups stuck under the canvas like pennies on a wet wall. Mab said a show that could not keep a bird was not worth driving.

So when the wagons were loaded and the calliope had been sold for scrap to a man in Frome, she sat on the step of the empty ring with a bag of crumbs and waited. The birds came back down through the open seam of the roof, sharp and black, cutting loops in the air above sawdust that was no longer there. They circled once, twice, and then one folded its wings and dropped to the boards beside her boot, quite unafraid.
Her grandmother had told her what that meant. A swallow that lands after the last show carries a travelling family's luck, and it will only go where the luck is kept. Mab did not believe it. She believed in axle grease and the price of hay. But she picked the bird up, warm as a heart, and carried it out to the lane where the final wagon waited with its tailboard down.
She set it on the seat beside the reins. It stayed there all the way to the Mendips, watching the hedges go by, and when they stopped at the crossroads it lifted off and went straight over the field towards the sea, cutting its white loops through the blue as if it had only been waiting for someone to ask the way.
