Blue portrait with scissor blades and snowflakes on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A tattooed portrait of a pale-faced figure with dark hair, shown in profile-leaning three-quarter view, is set against a blue background. Two large metal scissor blades cross the lower right of the design, with white snowflake shapes scattered around the face and blades. The shading is smooth and realistic, with soft blue tones and dark grey for the hair and blade edges, and the design fills the frame against a patterned carpet.

Mind the step, the gravel's loose by the sundial, and sit where the sun still reaches. My grandmother swore the pale boy came up Cotterell Lane the winter the hedges went white, carrying a sack of tools over one shoulder and no coat at all.

He had two long blades where his hands should have been, cold steel that caught the light like a pair of herring knives. Nobody on the lane would take him in. Mrs Pargeter had a yew hedge that her late husband had clipped into peacocks, and it had gone shaggy with neglect, but she was too proud to ask anyone for help. So she sent a note up the lane with the milk: come if you dare.

He came at dusk, and when the first flakes started he stood in her garden and worked without a word. The blades went snick, snick, and the hedge bent into birds and then into a fox, and the snow that settled on the clippings did not melt. By morning the whole garden was dressed in white, flakes cut into every branch, and the peacock had its tail back.

Mrs Pargeter paid him with a jar of honey and a warm loaf. He walked back up the lane, and that was the last anyone saw of him, except every December after, when the hedges on Cotterell Lane come out frosted with snowflakes that nobody cut.
