The cage came up at six this morning with Mr Pryce swearing about the wet, and I stood at the pithead gate with the flask you forgot and thought of you on the boat already, somewhere past Liverpool. Mam says you will write from every port, but she says it the way she says the weather will turn, so I am not holding my breath.

Pryce's nephew has taken your place on the face and cannot tell a roof fall from a bad joke. Yesterday he asked me what the word you scratched on the back of the kitchen door meant. I told him it meant let's go, which is what you always said when Dad wanted us in for chapel tea. You pronounced it like a fishmonger, Allons-y, and we laughed until Mam threw a tea towel at us both.

The door is still there. Mam painted over the rest of the kitchen at Easter but she left that corner alone, and I think she knew what it was for. Last night I sat at the table with the lamp turned low and listened to the wheel creak up on the headgear, and I counted the shifts the way Dad used to count pints, one for each time he said he would leave and didn't.

I have written it again under yours, in pencil, so the letters are mine as well. There is a pencil on the windowsill if you want to know what I mean. Send the fare and I will be on the first train out before you have finished the sentence, and you can teach me to say it properly.
