Always script tattoo on a wrist

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo spells out the word Always diagonally across the wrist. The letters have smooth, even linework with a bold, joined handwritten style and some shading in the thicker strokes. The photograph is taken close up against a dark background, with the palm and fingers of the hand visible below the lettering.

You had cut the word into the lintel at Hollin Keep the week before the carriers came for the stone, and by the time the first rain found it the A was already softening at the edges. Old Tobias Reeve said lettering on wet sandstone was a fool's errand. You kept your back to him and worked the chisel in long, even strokes, the way Agnes had taught you to hold a pen, every loop joined so that no letter could be lifted without the others coming with it.

Her letter arrived on the Tuesday coach, folded small enough to hide in a glove. She had written it in the quick, sloping hand you had admired since the schoolroom, the tail of the y swung far below the line. She was leaving for Carlisle with a surveyor who promised her a house with glass in every window. She did not ask you to follow. She asked only whether the word would still be standing when the ivy came through the arch.

So you climbed the tower stairs after dark with a lantern and a rag and scrubbed the lichen from the carving until your knuckles bled into the grit. Below, the bailey was full of sheep, and the wind came through the arrow slits with a noise like someone reading aloud in another room. By morning the letters stood out black and wet, every join holding.

Agnes came back in spring, though not for you. She stopped at the gate, read the lintel, and laughed once, a short surprised sound. Then she pressed her palm flat against the stone beside the letters, as if testing whether it was still warm from the chisel, and left a damp print that dried before she turned for the road.
