Allons-y script lettering on the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single word, Allons-y, is written in a flowing script with a looped capital A and a long tail on the y. The linework is smooth and of even weight, and the ink is a dark blue-black with soft grey shading where it has spread slightly into the skin. The word sits small and slightly angled across pale skin, with a blue top and folded fabric at the lower edge of the frame.

Dear Marguerite,

The ferry is late again, so I am writing this on the harbour wall with a gull watching me as if I owe it money. Mum has taken the tea urn back to the church hall and Dad is still pretending he doesn't mind that you're going. I told him you'd send postcards. He said postcards are for people who come back.
Grandfather Ewan used to say allons-y whenever a conversation got too heavy to carry. He said it on the slipway when the boats went out, and he said it at the kitchen table the night the doctor came over from the mainland. Nobody thought he meant anything by it except to keep moving. I used to think it was the most French thing that had ever happened on Inish Corran, which is to say not French at all.
Last week I found his old tide chart in the dresser drawer, the one with the pencilled crossings where he marked the safe channel through the reef. On the back, in his small slanted hand, he'd written the phrase again and underlined it twice. I'm enclosing it. Keep it in your coat pocket where the wind can't take it.
I've decided, somewhere between the urn and the second cup of tea, that I'm coming over to the mainland at Easter. Don't tell Dad. The horn just went, so I'd better run. Allons-y.
