The sea tank came off the lorry at Scarborough with one cracked pane and a seahorse missing from the cabinet, so Mam has been sulking since Monday. Don't tell her I know, but I think the missing one is in my coat pocket. It was the little grey one that wouldn't eat the brine shrimp unless you tapped the glass with a thumbnail. I found it floating face-down under the stall lamp, and it hadn't gone yet, so I cupped it in my palm and kept it warm until morning.

Mr Ferris who runs the Octopus Wheel says a seahorse is the only creature where the daddy carries the babies, which is why he thinks they're soft in the head. I told him he'd make a fine seahorse himself, the way he carries the takings about in his belt. He laughed so hard he dropped a tray of pennies down the gap between the dodgems.

Anyway, I've set up a new tank in the spare caravan, with kelp from the chip shop bins and salt from the Co-op. The seahorse has coiled her tail round the pipe and stares at me like I owe her rent. Ferris reckons we should sell her to the Blackpool man, but I haven't told him I've been calling her after Nan.

Come home at Easter if you can, and bring the blue paint. I want to do the ridges along my fingers properly this time, the way Nan painted the curls on the back of the sideshow banner, so that when I hold my hand up to the lamp it looks like she's swimming up the length of me.
