Matching blue snowflake tattoos on two feet
Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo
Two feet rest on a light towel, each with a blue snowflake tattoo of similar design, one slightly larger than the other. The snowflakes have a central star with eight arms, decorated with diamond tips, dotted detail and curled linework. The blue ink is set against bare skin, with the feet cropped at the toes and ankles on a soft, pale background.

Every winter the lamplighters of Carrowmere climbed the iron stairs at dusk, and every winter old Maud Tennant climbed up behind them with a pair of shears and a folded square of blue paper. She cut snowflakes out of the night air, she said, the way other women cut bread. Nobody believed her until the year the river froze up to the third step of the Cobbler's Bridge.

Her grandson Pell, who was nine and had never been told no in a way that stuck, asked to come up with her. She let him hold the lamp. From the roof of the wool exchange they could see the whole city going blue under the gaslight, the chimneys, the tramlines, the dark dome of the cathedral. Maud folded the paper eight times, then cut, and each cut opened into a star. She told him every arm had to be a different length, or the frost would think it was a copy and melt it.
Pell tried his own, and it came out lopsided, one arm stubby as a thumb. He cried. Maud took the paper, unfolded it, and snipped a new arm onto the short side with a little diamond at the tip. "There," she said. "Now it's yours, and nobody else's flake will match it."
The snow came down over Carrowmere before morning. Pell swore afterwards that one flake landed on his sleeve with a diamond tip on one arm, just like the one he had made. He never learned whether she had cut it for him or he had cut it for her, and he stopped asking once he saw the same shape come down every winter after, on the roof of the wool exchange and on the cuffs of his own coat.
