Geometric stag head on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A stag head in profile is drawn in faceted, angular black linework, with its antlers and jaw built from straight segments. The lines are thin and even, and the design is filled with no shading, so the outline alone forms the image. It sits on the forearm against a pink wall and grey fabric, shot straight on.

The ink is still wet on the drawing board when Mr Harrowby tells you to stop trying to make the stag look alive. "Deer aren't round, lad. Nothing out there is round." You have a set square, a steel rule and a stub of pencil, and the stag on the wall above the bar at the Ram's Head has been watching you for three weeks, its glass eye catching the lamplight.

Cressley Fold is four streets, a chapel, a picture house that shows the same two films, and the surveyor's office where you draw boundary plans for the council. Every evening you walk home past the Ram's Head and count the facets on that stag's skull: eleven straight edges where a naturalist would see a curve. In the mornings you rule them again in pen, each line so thin the paper barely takes the dent.

In March the flood takes the footbridge, and the council sends you out with a theodolite to find where the river means to go. You spend four days among wet hawthorn and cold mud. On the fourth, at dusk, a hind steps out of the alders and stands side-on to you, all angles, every joint a clean straight line against the grey water. You don't reach for the pencil. You just look, the way you'd look at a plan that has finally closed.

Back at the office Mr Harrowby reads your report, then turns the drawing board face down on the desk. "Your stag's got no face," he says. You tell him the outline is all that needs keeping and the rest can go to the weather. He grunts and sends you home. The stag above the bar still watches the door, and you find you no longer mind.
