Barbed wire infinity with fish hooks and Country

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an infinity symbol drawn with barbed wire, with two fish hooks forming the upper left loop. The script word Country sits inside the right loop. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with the barbs and hooks shaded in grey, and the design is fully black ink. The design is centred across the skin, with dark fabric visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fence came down the hill in a straight line my grandfather strung in 1962, and it ran right into Hallam Water as if it meant to keep the trout in too. Every spring my sister Ruth and I walked the length of it with pliers and a coil of new wire, mending where the sheep had leaned or the frost had lifted the staples.

Our brothers never agreed where the boundary ended. Cal swore the line stopped at the reeds, while Dougie insisted it ran out to the sunken punt in the middle. So each summer they fished on opposite sides and every rise between them became a small war. One August evening Dougie flicked his line back too hard and hooked the wire, the rod bent double, and Cal waded in up to his belt to free it, both of them swearing loud enough to scare the herons off.

Ruth arrived with a flask and didn't take a side. She cut the wire where it met the water, bent both ends round into a loop, and twisted them back across each other so the middle crossed like the figure eight on the scoreboard at the county show. She hung two old hooks from the snags at the top, then scratched one word into the mud with a stick, the name of the ground they had both been arguing over.

Neither brother has moved that fence since. The loop still sits at the water's edge, going soft with rust, and the two of them fish inside it now, one on each side of the crossing, and neither has ever asked where the line really runs.
