Blue starfish tattoo with swirls
Other · Colour · Photo
A starfish with five curved arms fills the frame, outlined in dark blue and filled with lighter blue swirls and small dotted accents along the arm edges. The linework is bold and even, and the shading is soft, giving the design a raised, dimensional look against the skin. The ink is a single blue family on a warm skin tone, and the motif is centred with the arms reaching toward each corner.

'Mind the sill, Nell, the barnacles have had the lot of it since Tuesday,' Granddad said, and she stepped over the cold rim of the rock pool with the bucket held against her hip.

Inside the bucket a starfish lay with one arm curled under itself, the way a sleeper tucks a hand beneath a pillow. It was a deep, bruised blue on top, and when the light caught the small knuckled bumps along each arm they looked as if someone had pressed beads into wet clay. Nell had found it wedged under a ledge at low water, a little wrong in its shape, two of its five arms much shorter than the rest.
'That one's been in a fight,' Granddad said. 'Gulls, or a crab. Doesn't stop them.'
The harbour wall sat in the afternoon sun, and Nell carried the bucket along it to the steps where the tide was turning. She knelt and tipped the water out slowly, so the starfish slid rather than fell, and it lay on the wet stone with its arms spread toward the four corners of the sky. For a moment nothing happened. Then the short arm lifted, very slightly, and reached for the sea.
