A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had slipped off the top of the lock again, and Mags Pollard found it floating in the cut among the coal dust and lily pads, a thin silver crescent no wider than a bargepole's shadow. She knelt on the cill with her sleeves rolled and lifted it out by the horns. It was cold and it hummed like a kettle thinking about boiling. Around its rim, where the old paint had worn away, were little glass hearts, blue and violet and butter yellow, set into the metal like sweets in a cake.

Her grandfather had said the hearts were the moon's stock. Each time it sank into the water it shed a few, and whoever found them had to carry them up the towpath to the lock keepers' chapel, where the old women kept a rack of them in the window. Mags had never believed him. But the crescent was warm now in her hands, one heart had cut her thumb, and the blood had run pink along the outline.

She walked it up the towpath in the grey before dawn. A man in a flat cap on the Marigold asked what she was carrying, and she told him the truth, that it was the moon and it wanted its hearts back. He laughed, then looked down at the cut and stopped, because the reflection there was a full silver circle with nothing missing from it at all.

At the chapel the old women took the crescent without a word and fitted it back against the sky above the lock. One by one the hearts lit, blue, violet, yellow, green, like a church window coming on at evening. Mags went home and washed her thumb. In the morning only one heart was left floating on the cut, and she kept it in her pocket for the rest of her life.
