Blue TARDIS tattoo on a finger

Hand · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a small blue TARDIS, the police box from Doctor Who, with a yellow light on its roof and dark outlines around the body and door panels. The outlines are bold and the blue is flat with little visible shading. The four panels show the same design from different angles on the same finger, with a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp on the roof was the only yellow thing for three miles of white, and you had been staring at it since the coach left you at the bottom of Harrowgate Lane. The landlord of the Crooked Heron had warned you. The blue box had arrived during the blizzard with nobody inside to answer its door, and it hummed like a fridge when you laid a palm against the panel. You did not lay a palm against it. You stood with your case in the drift and counted the flakes that drifted through the glow.

The door opened before you could decide anything. A woman in a moth-eaten cardigan stepped out, stamping snow from boots that had been mended many times, and looked at you the way a postman looks at a parcel with no stamp. She said the box was her grandfather's and that it only ever came down where somebody had lost the way home. Then she pressed a brass key into your glove and asked you to hold the lamp steady while she found the angle for the lock.

You held the lamp. It was warmer than a bulb had any right to be, and the humming in the wood slowed as though it were listening to your pulse. The woman talked about the winter her grandfather walked out into a white field and was never seen again, and how the box had come back every December since, always a little further up the lane. She turned the key. The door swung inward on a room far bigger than the outside had promised, full of coats that belonged to people you had not yet met.

When she took the lamp back, its light went out like a breath on glass. The box was only a box after that, dark and ordinary, sitting in the snow with the drift already filling its corners. By morning the inn would have no record of it, and the only proof you had ever stood there was a single boot print, facing the door.
