Bold geometric bars across neck and upper back

Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The left panel shows a side view of a thick dark line running up the neck and turning into a horizontal stroke over the shoulder, with a second parallel line beside it. The right panel shows the back view, where several solid vertical bars and angled strokes form a symmetrical arrow-like shape down the centre of the upper back. The ink is solid and dark with crisp edges, set against plain skin and loose hair.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The chevrons went on the snow poles in October, before the fell road closed, so lorry drivers could find the verge when the cloud came down. Hannah Ruddock had done the Stainmoor stretch for nineteen winters and could paint a bar in the dark by feel: two strokes of black enamel, then one slanted arm pointing to the safe side.

The new lad, Tomasz, kept asking why the bars had to be so thick. 'Because a wiper blade at forty miles an hour won't read a line the width of a pencil,' she said, and handed him the scraper. They worked up from the cattle grid at Hell Gill, the tin knocking against the van door, a dog barking somewhere down in the becks.

Near the summit a pole had lost its top third to a tractor. Hannah didn't replace it. She fetched a fence rail from the back of the van, bolted it across the stub, and painted the arrow so it pointed back the way they had come. Tomasz asked who it was for. She said nobody had driven that road in a white-out since 1987, and the post was for whoever would.

By noon the fog lifted off the tops, and the arrow was the only thing on the hill that pointed anywhere, a black mark on white, waiting.
