The beck froze solid again on Tuesday, so I've been carrying water up from the trough in the byre like Mam used to. Dad's hands are worse with the cold and he won't say so, but I've seen him sitting on the milking stool with the pail untouched. The new ewes are lambing early, three of them, and the little grey one with the swirl on her flank is the one I keep watching.

You'll laugh, but I went through the old chest in the loft looking for the tin with the seed invoices and found Granddad's brass stamp instead, the one he used on the feed sacks. It has a diamond in the middle and curls either side, like frost spreading across the window. I pressed it into a spare block of wax to see if it would still take, and it did, a blue-grey bloom under the lamp, with the flames going off the edges like smoke from the burning hedge. Dad saw it and went quiet, then said Granddad always did the same thing with a bit of wax when the snow kept him in.

Come at Easter if the roads allow. Bring the good kettle, ours has a crack. The brass stamp is on the mantel now, beside the clock that doesn't work, and I'm leaving it there until you've seen it.
