Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large stylised bird, with a pointed beak and wings split into patterned sections, sits on the outer upper arm. The linework is bold and the wings are filled with dense black scrollwork and curved motifs. The tattoo is in black and grey ink against a plain skin tone, with a dark top and a blurred background behind it.

The bird came back to the canoe on the third morning, settling on the prow as if it had never left. Tui decided not to mention it. His uncle had warned them the sea would go flat and grey before it gave anything back, and that a boy who talked too much would talk himself overboard. So Tui kept his hands on the paddle and watched the carved bird, its split wings patterned with the same curls his aunt had cut into the storehouse doors.

She had carved it the winter before, cross-legged on packed earth with a gouge and a tin of ash for the grooves. Each curl was a current she knew by name. The tight spirals were the eddies off the reef at low tide, the long banded lines the swells running under the wind. 'Follow the wings, not the sky,' she had told them, then went back to sanding while the children argued over who would hold the lamp.

On the fourth afternoon the wind dropped and the bird turned its head. Tui felt it before he saw it, a tug on the hull, a change in the way the water slid past. He leant left and lifted the paddle until the spirals lined up with the swell, and for an hour nothing happened but the ache in his shoulders. Then the cloud tore open, a white thread of reef showed across the bow, and beyond it a thin line of smoke rose from the cookfires on the shore.

His aunt was standing at the water's edge when they grounded, the gouge still tucked in her belt. She did not ask how they had come home. She only looked at the bird on the prow, then at Tui's raw palms, and nodded once, the way she nodded at a clean cut.
