Ornate owl perched on a branch
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A symmetrical owl with wide, staring eyes sits on a bare branch, its head and chest filled with fine swirling filigree, a crescent moon and a Celtic knot pattern. The linework is dense and detailed, with shading built from stippled and scalloped feather texture. The colour fades from deep blue at the head to magenta at the body, set against a cream, mottled background.

Dear Tomasz,

The owl came back last night, the same one, sitting on the dead rowan beside the bin store as if it had paid the council rent. I went down at two with the bin bag because the lift was out again, and I saw it before it saw me. Its eyes are the colour of old pennies, and the feathers on its chest look as though someone has gone over them with a fine nib, scale after scale, curl after curl. Mrs Adeyemi on nine swears it is the man who fell from the roof in 1987. I told her ghosts don't need a branch that has been dead since the Olympics.
Mr Ruiz from the fourth floor says the crescent on its forehead is the old crest from the estate office, which is nonsense, but he drew it for me on the back of a rent reminder so I could compare. The knot on its chest, he says, is the one his grandmother cut into the lintel of their house in Oaxaca to keep the wind out. I believe him more than I believe the council.
Here is the thing I keep turning over. The top of the owl is blue, like the sky over the car park at six in the morning, and the bottom has faded to the colour of the wine we drank at your wedding. Nobody tells you a block of flats can hold a bird on its branch if you wait long enough. Come up at Easter and bring the flask. I will show you where it sits.
