Blue wave and Aquarius symbol design

Japanese · Mixed · Flash

A standalone design of a stylised blue wave with curling foam crests and streaking lines that sweep up from the lower left. Three black zigzag lines sit across the wave, forming the Aquarius water-bearer symbol, with small black dots scattered around it. The blue is shaded with soft wash-like gradients, and the black linework is bold and crisp against the white background.

The tide tables for February were still pinned to the chandlery door when Nell Ashworth came down the slipway with two copper buckets and the wrong boots on. Her father had kept the harbour almanac at Marrow Point for thirty-one years, and every January he drew the same small sign beside the water-bearer's days: two zigzags, like rain falling across a fence. Nobody in the village could say why he bothered. Nell thought she could.

The sea had been running backwards up the estuary since Tuesday, curling over the sea wall in long white combs that broke against the cottage roofs and went hissing down the lanes. The pump at the crossroads had seized in the cold. Mrs Pryce at the bakery had sent word that her ovens were dry, so Nell filled the buckets at the spring where the water came up clean through the shingle, then walked them uphill with the spray stinging her cheeks and the crests rolling in beside her like a herd of slow grey horses.

At the bakery door the old keeper, Tobias Lind, stood waiting with a lamp and a ledger. 'Your father filled the trough the same way,' he said, without looking up. 'Two buckets for the ovens, one more for the sea.' Nell tipped the last bucket into the gutter where the foam ran thickest. A single blue curl lifted out of it, caught the lamplight, and folded back on itself like a bow. She laughed. Tobias did not.

By first light the loaves were cooling on the sills and the foam had dropped to a grey line along the wall. Nell opened the almanac at January and wrote the day beside her father's two zigzags: rain, water carried, the sea given its share. It was the only entry that year she did not have to check against the tables.
