Blue wave on the ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A curled blue wave with splashes of droplets sits on the side of the ribcage. The shading uses soft, layered blue washes with lighter highlights, giving a painted watercolour look. The wave is centred on the skin, with the black top at the upper edge of the frame and the body cropped at the waist.

You have been driving the state road across the salt flats since the fuel light came on, and the tarmac ahead keeps folding itself into water. Every half mile a long blue sheet lies across the lane, rippling, with the black stubs of creosote poles standing in it upside down. You know it is heat. Your uncle told you that when you were nine, standing beside a road like this with a bottle of lemonade, and you did not believe him then either.

Near a pull-in, a sign the sun has bleached to a ghost reads WATER NEXT 40 MILES. The mirage peels off the road and rolls toward you in a slow curl, like a hand turning over, its crest lit from underneath as if it were glass. You stop the car. The engine ticks as it cools. You step out into air so dry it steals the moisture from your lips before you can taste it, and you watch the wave hang above the flats, throwing off a fine spray of bright specks that drift and never fall.
A pickup slows beside you, and a man leans across the bench seat. "Lost?" he asks. "Everybody who sees that thinks it's the sea." You tell him you were headed for Lode, the town on your father's old atlas. He laughs and says there is no Lode any more, only the dam and the wind. He hands you a bottle of water, sweating in the heat, and when you look back the wave has folded itself flat and gone, leaving a single bead of blue light on the road.
The bottle is real and cold against your palm. You unscrew the cap and drink, and it tastes of plastic and nothing like the sea you were promised, but you drink until it is empty and then you get back in the car.
