The rain had found the gap in the tarpaulin again, and it dripped onto the tin lanterns Tamsin had hung in rows from the crossbar. Each one was a crescent moon pierced by her father's punch, the swirls cut so fine that the candle inside threw them onto the wet cobbles like lace. She wiped the third drip off the nearest one with her sleeve and counted the day's takings in her head, then counted them again.

A boy of nine or so stopped under the awning with his hood up and his trainers soaked through. He wanted the lantern with the star, though there was no star on any of them. "It's missing a bit," he said, pointing at the small round hole her father had left where a star should be, the one he had never explained. Tamsin told him that was the price of it, and that he could have it for the coins in his pocket if he could count them out right. He counted slowly, lips moving, and got it right.

When he had gone she sat on the upturned crate and turned the empty punch over in her hand. Her father had always cut the star last, after the swirls, because he said a moon needed something to look at before it could be any use. She had thought that a foolish thing for a man who sold metal to say. Now she lit a candle and set it in the boy's lantern, and the rain-spattered cobbles filled with a single bright point, trembling in the draught, the only star in the market.
