Moon phases tattoo on the thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

Five moon phases, from a crescent to a full moon and back to a crescent, run diagonally across the outer thigh. Each moon has soft, blended shading with cratered surface detail, giving a watercolour-like finish rather than hard outlines. Blue and purple tones dominate the upper moons, shifting to pink and red on the lower ones against plain, pale skin.

Dear Nell, the Bramley trees have given up on July and gone straight to September, which Father says is what happens when a daughter leaves for the city and nobody thinks to tell the weather. I counted the moons from the top rung of the ladder last night, because you always said I couldn't keep track of anything for longer than a week. There were five between the new one and the full one, so the month has been turning over on itself, and I could see every stage of it laid out above the orchard like a row of shelled peas.

The fruit on the low branches has turned red, the windfalls split open where the wasps have been at them. Mr Ashdown next door says you should never plant anything once the moon goes thin, but I have never once taken his advice on planting. I sat on the wall with the tin of cocoa you left behind and watched the big one come up over the hop field, blue as a bruise at first and then warming, its craters showing like thumbprints pressed into dough.

I know you think I'm trying to make you come home. I'm not. I'm telling you the moon is still going round whether anybody watches it from the same wall or not. By the end of the week it will be a sliver again, the sort you have to squint for, and then it will be gone altogether for three nights, which is the part I dislike most.

Take the bag of Discovery apples I've posted and eat one on the train, the red side facing out. Love, Bea. P.S. I've left the back gate open, though the dog has learned to lift the latch.
