Blue enso circle on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with dark hair tied back is seen from behind, showing a single open circle tattoo between her shoulder blades. The circle is made of bold, dry-brush strokes in shades of blue, with a dark, dense section where the stroke ends and tapered lighter edges where it begins. The plain turquoise background and black shoulder straps keep the focus on the tattoo.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you remember Mr Halloran's maths room. I'll tell you about Imelda Stroud, who sat by the radiator in Year Nine and never once handed in homework on time. Some of you will remember she could draw. Not pretty drawings. She'd take a jam jar of ink from the art cupboard, a brush with half its bristles gone, and make a ring on the back of a sheet of paper in one go.

Her father mended boats down at the Ferris yard, and he taught her that a stroke has to be made in a single breath or it's just a wobble. So she'd stand at the sink in the art room, dip, lift, and then come down hard at the start where the brush was full of ink, letting the line trail away thin, like the tide going out over the sand. Mr Halloran said it looked like a plate somebody had dropped in the wrong blue. She told him it was a door left open.
Last I heard, she was painting in a shed on the Cornish coast, selling circles to people who had no idea what they were buying. I bought one myself, years back, on a postcard, and it hangs in my kitchen now, blue as the bay at half past six. You can stare at it all you like. It doesn't close, and it doesn't need to.
So raise your glasses to Imelda. Raise them to the girl who never did her sums and got every line right first time. And if anyone asks where the gap in the circle goes, tell them to ask the brush.
