Breaking wave in a circle on the wrist
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A breaking wave with a curled crest is set inside a circle on the inner wrist. The wave is built from fine stippled dots and short strokes, with denser shading in the hollow of the curl and lighter dots in the surrounding water and the pale edge of the circle. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against a softly blurred background, with the subject centred and filling most of the frame.

Mara Oduya had been asked three times that morning whether she carried anything that was not her own, and three times she had said no, which was true of the bag and not of the boat. The officer at Hollin Point wrote slowly. He had a round brass magnifier on a cord and he held it over her passport as if the ink might be hiding something under the paper.

The fishermen say the first keeper of that crossing, a ferryman called Tobin Rask, once won a wave from the sea at dice. He carried it across the strait cupped in his palm, and it was the only thing the water ever lost. Every crossing after, the wave rolled up inside a circle of the tide-line, waiting for someone to open a hand and let it break. Tobin never did. He kept it until his knuckles went white, then gave it to his daughter, who carried it to the far shore and never once looked down.
At the desk the magnifier found nothing. The officer tapped the stamp, pushed the passport back, and asked her to open the bag. She did. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, was only a small grey stone worn perfectly round, with a curl of white foam pressed into its face like a thumbprint. He looked at it for a long moment. Then he said, very quietly, that his grandmother had owned one too, and waved her through.
