Blueberry branch on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A branch with clusters of blue blueberries and reddish-brown leaves climbs from the wrist side of the forearm up towards the elbow. The berries are shaded in blue with light highlights, and the leaves and stems are outlined in dark brown or black with soft orange-brown shading. The arm hangs against a white brick wall, with the hand and a ring visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The 4.10 stopped at the halt again today, though nobody had flagged it, and the driver leaned out to ask if we had any of the blue ones left. I told him the moor has been stripped since August. He laughed and said his wife would have his hide if he came back without a pot. So I went up past the old quarry with the basket on my arm, and I found one bush still holding out under the heather, the berries so ripe they split if you looked at them hard.
I stood there a long while and thought about Mr Ashworth, who used to walk up every Sunday with his tin cup and never once picked a berry for himself. He said the branch knew when you were greedy. I didn't believe him, but I took only what I could count on one hand and left the rest for the blackbirds.
When I came down, there was a new sign hung crooked over the station door, and the signal was red on both lines. Nobody was on the platform except the porter, who was holding a letter addressed to you in a hand I didn't know. I took it from him and said I would bring it to the box myself.
So here I am, writing this at your table with a berry in my mouth and your letter open beside me. Come home Saturday. Bring the jam jar back. The leaves on that bush have gone the colour of rust now, and I think it is ready to be cut.
Love, Edie
