Fine line vine and leaves on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a slender vine with small open leaves that arcs across the wrist and continues as a short sprig further up the forearm. The linework is thin, even and unshaded, in black ink only. The close crop shows the forearm and hand against a brick wall and loose blue linen fabric.

Dear Tomasz, the water lorry from Calvary Springs has not come for three weeks, so I have been sleeping on the porch with the radio and the old dog, counting the trucks that do not stop. You will laugh, but something is growing through the crack in the forecourt beside the fuel pump. It is a vine, thin as cotton thread, and it has put out leaves no bigger than my thumbnail. Each one opens at the top like a cupped hand, as if it is waiting for something to be poured into it.

I emptied the washing bucket over the roots last Tuesday, which was foolish, because water is what we are short of out here. Mr Adair, the road surveyor, stopped at noon and said it was bindweed from a packet of seed some driver must have dropped. He pulled it out with his gloves on and threw it in the ditch. The next morning it was back, longer, and it had climbed the marker post as far as the second reflector.
Yesterday I drove the Chevrolet out to the junction and found the same vine running along the verge toward the old mission bell, with sprigs branching off every few yards like small arms raised to the sky. Someone has been planting it along the route, or the route has been planting itself, and I do not know which is worse. I have decided to stay until the lorry comes. I have tied a strip of my blue apron to the post so that whoever comes looking for the water will know where to turn.
