Cloud and lightning bolt on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a shaded cloud with a solid black lightning bolt striking downward from its base. The cloud is built from soft grey shading and the bolt has crisp black edges with a thin trailing line at the top. The tattoo sits alone on a pale upper arm against a dark top and plain background.

Sit still, the lot of you, because the lift is broken again and Mrs Pardoe is coming up the stairs with her shopping, and you know how she is about being talked over. Hollin Tower had nineteen floors and one cloud. The cloud lived above the fourteenth, where the aerial wires ran, and it was grey and round like a bad loaf. It never once blew off in a wind. Everybody knew it was there and nobody thought it was anything.

In the summer of the big heat, a lad called Danny Roake, who fixed lifts for the council and owed nobody a penny, climbed out through the roof hatch with a spanner in his back pocket. He wanted to see what the cloud was made of. He stood under it with his arm raised, the way you'd flag a bus, and the sky went white. The bolt came down the wire, straight into his sleeve, and when the smoke cleared there was a mark on his arm the shape of a lightning bolt, black and sharp at the edges, with a thin tail running up towards the elbow like a kite string that had snapped.

The cloud let him go, mind. It only wanted a receipt. Every year since, it takes one bolt from the tower, and it always takes it from someone who looked up first. Danny kept his sleeves rolled down for the rest of his life and never once told anyone the sky had done it.

So if you're on the fourteenth floor on a close night and the bulb in the landing starts to flicker, don't go looking up. Pass me that biscuit tin, Ruby, and let's see who's next on the list.
