Bluebird and ornate key tattoo
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A bluebird with blue wings, a pale orange breast and a small dark eye faces left, perched on two legs. An ornate orange key with scrolled bows sits above its back, set against a soft red circle. Bold black outlines define the bird, with smooth colour blending in the feathers and shading on the belly, and the design is centred on a plain patch of skin.

Mrs Ada Pell had one waltz left to play before the doors could be locked, and the bluebird had come in through the fanlight during the quickstep. It sat on the rim of the brass candelabra above the bandstand, blinking down at the dancers as if it had paid for a ticket. Nobody had the heart to shoo it. Her brother Len swept the parquet around its shadow and said it would bring luck, which he said about everything.

The key was the trouble. Every night at eleven Ada wound the big clock over the entrance with a brass key that had two curled bows like a pair of ram's horns, and tonight it had gone from its hook. She searched behind the bar, under the cloakroom counter, and through the pockets of coats nobody had claimed since spring. The band packed up around her. The bluebird dropped from the candelabra, hopped across the floor to the coat stand and tugged at a loose thread on the hem of her own coat.
Her fingers found the lining. The key came out warm, as if it had ridden a long while in a pocket close to somebody's chest. Len said he had thought it lost for good in March, when the lad from the gasworks borrowed the hall for his engagement party and never brought back the spare. Ada did not ask who had been wearing it that night. She wound the clock, and the hands moved on past eleven.
When she unlocked the side door for the last time, the bluebird went out first, low over the car park and up past the pier lamps, a hard blue shape against the black sea. Ada stood with the key warm in her palm and listened to the clock ticking behind her in the empty hall.
