Hummingbird and purple flower tattoo

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A hummingbird in flight with its wings spread and its long beak reaching toward a large purple flower in the upper right. The bird is shaded with soft gradients in blue, green, violet and grey, with fine feather detail on the wings and tail. The colour is vivid against the lighter skin, and the composition places the bird centrally with the flower framing its head.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Parwin Ash had kept the glasshouse at Tremayne for thirty-one years, and in all that time the hibiscus by the east wall had never once been out of step with the weather. So when it bloomed in February, a flush of purple the size of a saucer, the gardeners came to look at it the way people visit a sick aunt. Nobody thought to check the glass for a hole. It was the hummingbird that had found one, a bird no bigger than a thumb, green at the throat and blue as a gas flame along the back.

It came in through a pane somebody had cracked during the frost, and for a week it worked the flowers hard, hanging in the air the way a thought hangs before it becomes a sentence. Parwin's nephew Dai, who was nine and believed everything, asked whether it had come from the tropics. His mother said probably from a travelling show. Parwin said nothing, because she had seen the bird drink from the hibiscus and then turn, quick as a dropped coin, to look straight at her.

On the eighth morning the bird was gone, and the hibiscus had faded to the grey of wet slate. Dai found a single blue tail feather caught on the sill and pressed it between the pages of the seed catalogue. Parwin never mended the pane. She told the gardeners it would be left as it was, and then she went back to pricking out seedlings, humming a tune nobody had taught her.
