Bluebirds perched on a padlock and a key
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two bluebirds are tattooed on the forearms, one perched on a silver padlock with a treble clef in an oval and the other perched on an ornate scrolled key. The birds are shaded in vivid blues and turquoise with soft highlights and realistic feather detail. The padlock and key are rendered in grey and lilac tones with smooth shading, set against pale skin on a dark background.

The snow had shut the Halt Road by four o'clock, and by six the only guest left in the taproom was a fiddler called Orla Marsh, who had walked in out of the blizzard with a padlock on a cord round her neck and no luggage at all. I was the one feeding the fire, so I heard her story in pieces, between logs and the kettle.

Her father had been a locksmith in Kendal. The spring before he died, a pair of bluebirds nested in his yard, and one of them kept landing on the workbench while he filed. He made the padlock for it, she said, with a treble clef stamped on the face so it would only open to a tune. The key, scrolled like a fern, he made for the bird's partner, though that bird never came back for it. Orla had carried both ever since, losing the key once and finding it again in a coat lining.
Around eleven the lamps guttered and died. Orla took the padlock from her cord, set it on the bar, and played four slow bars of something her father used to hum over a vice. The shackle sprang open with a small clean sound, like a bird lifting off a wire. She looked at me and said, quite plainly, that she had never once managed it before.
In the morning the road was ploughed and she was gone, the padlock left open on the bar with the key lying beside it. The next March a postcard came from Kendal, two bluebirds on the front, one perched on a lock and one on a key. On the back there was only a treble clef, and I took it to mean she had found the tune again.
