Book spines and quotes on both forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two forearms covered in black and grey tattoos. A stack of book spines with titles in outline lettering sits beside a large quotation mark on one arm, with a block of capitalised text next to it. Smaller sketched figures and a line of script appear near the wrist, and a second large quotation mark and a script quote run along the lower forearm.

Hettie had shelved the same five books spine-out on the pier warehouse wall for nineteen winters, because the damp got into anything lying flat. When the tide came over the sea wall that March, it took the lower shelves and left the spines standing, swollen and blank as loaves. Ada Pell arrived at dawn with a bucket and asked whether the library was closed, and Hettie said it was only closed to people who wanted dry paper.

They spent a week drying pages on washing lines strung between the lifeboat hooks. Ada had a habit of reading aloud while she pegged things, so the gulls learned the bits she repeated. A man who came in for fish stopped every morning to ask which story was which, and Hettie told him the titles were the only honest part of any book. The rest, she said, was the reader's business.
On the Friday the lines came down and Hettie found the ledger had washed to the back shelf unharmed. Its last entry was in her own hand, from the year the sea took her husband's boat: a borrower's name and a single word, return. She had never written a return date since. Ada asked what the word meant, and Hettie said it meant she had been waiting for someone to come and fetch the rest.
Ada took the ledger home that night. The next morning she pinned a fresh slip inside the cover of a book nobody had yet asked for, wrote her own name where the water had blurred the old one, and below it, in smaller letters, the date she intended to bring it back.
