Old Ailsa kept the lamp on the north skerry for forty winters, and she kept a rule the children on Brenna learned before they could walk: sleep less, read more. Nobody knew where she got it. The minister said it was foreign, and the schoolmaster said it was nonsense, but the rule outlived them both.

The year the book boat came, the island had one book, a water-stained almanac with its pages gone soft at the corners. Ewan Tulloch, who was nine and too clever for his boots, meant to read it end to end before the spring tide. He sat up by the peat fire every night with a tallow stub, and every night the sea came up the shingle and asked for his sleep, the way it asked everyone.
He gave it a little at a time. An hour off the bed, then two. By March his eyes had gone the colour of wet slate, and the almanac had got no further than the tide tables.
On the last night of the month, a grey clerk came up the path with a ledger under his arm and a pen behind his ear. He opened the ledger at Ewan's name. "You have been reading," he said. "Good. Now you can read what you owe." Ewan turned the page and found every hour of sleep he had ever lost, written in his own careful hand, and beside them the words he had not yet read. He read until the lamp on the skerry went out at dawn, and when he looked up the clerk had gone, leaving the almanac open on the table at the first page.
