Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two wrists are shown with matching tattoos of stick figures, one larger and one smaller, joined by a thin black line that runs between them. Small red hearts sit beside the figures and the line is drawn in clean black linework with no shading. The image is a close, evenly lit view of both arms against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The string had been Mabel's idea, and she had tied it on the first morning of the fair, when the dodgem cars were still cold and the ticket booth smelled of diesel. Her brother Alfie was seven and took everything literally, so when she told him the red balloon would float up to the top of the big wheel if he held the other end tight enough, he believed her. The balloon did not float. It bumped along the grass, snagged on a tent peg, and burst with a sound like a cough. Alfie cried for a whole minute, then asked for another one.

By Thursday they had a proper system. Mabel drew two stick people on the back of a programme with a biro borrowed from the candyfloss man, a tall one with a hat and a small one holding its hand up, and she drew a dotted line between them that she said was the rope. Alfie added a heart beside the small one because hearts were what you did when you were pleased. The paper went into the pocket of Mabel's cardigan and came out every time one of them was lost, which was often, because the fair was enormous to a child and the crowds were all knees.

On the last night the generator failed and the whole field went dark except for the lights on the carousel, which kept turning slowly as if nothing had happened. Mabel found Alfie sitting on a bale of straw with his sleeve pulled over his fist. She didn't say anything clever. She just unwound the string from her wrist, held one end out, and waited until he took it. The lights came back on a little after that, and the tall man and the small one went on standing where they had been drawn, the line between them still just slack enough to hold.
