Party message and martini glasses on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist and lower forearm bearing a small text design in a typewriter-style font, with the words I'm with Hannah's 21st birthday party and if I'm lost, please buy me a drink. Two purple martini glasses sit beside the text. The black lettering and purple accents are crisp on a plain grey background, and the design looks like a temporary tattoo.

The call came in at ten to three on a Saturday from a payphone outside the Crown and Pennant, and the woman on the line read me a message she had copied onto a card, word for word, as if I were a court clerk. I am with the party, it began, then the name of a birthday I had never heard of, and then, in a smaller hand that had clearly been added later, if I am lost, please buy me a drink.

I told her the drink was not in my gift but the taxi was, and that I would send Kev, who owed me for the Christmas rota. She thanked me so warmly I almost believed a car would arrive in four minutes. Kev was not free. Kev was in Thorne making a fry-up for his mother-in-law, and the only car left on the rank was Dennis, who had not spoken on the radio since the Hollin Bridge flood and who preferred to find addresses by smell.
Dennis found her anyway. When I raised him on the handset at quarter past three, he reported a pavement strewn with coats, a traffic cone wearing a tiara, and two purple cocktail glasses balanced on a bus shelter bench as if they had been placed there for a photograph. The birthday girl was sitting on the kerb with her shoes in her lap, explaining to Dennis that the card in her pocket was the only sensible thing anyone had written all night.
Dennis bought her a lemonade from the garage on the corner, drove her home at the speed of a hearse, and rang the office to log the fare. Under the reason for the journey, he typed a single line: found, drink bought, owed one.
