Botanical arm tattoo with bird and flowers

Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A woman's arm shows a botanical tattoo with a perched bird, a branch of teal and green leaves, and teal flower blooms running from the upper arm down the forearm. Lower on the forearm, a pink flower and grey line details sit near the wrist, where the hand is tucked into a yellow dress pocket. The fine linework and soft shading are shown in a close crop against a light wall and grey backdrop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bird had kept to the same broken branch of the Ashgrave hedge for three days, and the head gardener, Oswin Pell, declared it a sign that the old queen was dying. Mirelle, who had been sent to sweep the terrace and not to listen, said nothing. She watched its teal back catch the morning light and wondered why a creature so plain in its manners should choose a wall that nobody had trimmed in forty years.

The hedge had not flowered since the year the river froze. Its leaves were the green of pond weed, and along the highest vines the blue blossoms opened like bells that no one was permitted to ring. The rule was old and simple: nobody cut the branches, nobody climbed the wall. But at the foot of the stones a pink rose had come out overnight, out of season, and its petals were already curling at the edges like a letter left out in rain.

On the third evening she carried the rose to the wall and stood on the mounting block. The bird did not fly. It turned its head, considered the flower in her hand, and hopped down a single twig until it could take the stem in its beak. Then it carried the rose into the thicket, and the blue bells above it began, one by one, to turn towards the palace windows.

By morning the queen's shutters were open. On the sill lay a single pink petal, still damp, and below it the branch stood bare where the bird had sat.
