Bow tattoo on upper back and fine marks on arm
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person wearing a cream braided halter top is photographed from behind, with a shaded grey bow tattoo at the top of the back just below the neckline and a thin chain necklace. On the upper arm there is a vertical arrangement of small, delicate black marks with fine linework, which are too small to read clearly. The palette is entirely black and grey, and the soft, pale background keeps the focus on the skin and the tattoos.

Mind the cairn, that one's been waiting since the thaw. Sit down, sit, the wind up here doesn't care who's listening. My grandmother told this at the top of the Hollin Pass, and she had it from a carter whose mule had more sense than he did.

There was a woman who kept the tollhouse on the far side, and every traveller who came over the saddle had to tie a strip of cloth to the old thorn before she'd give them a bed. Grey ribbon, mostly, because grey was all the mill sold. She tied a bow on each one, the same bow her mother had taught her, two loops and a tail that never lay flat. Folk said a bow held a promise until the wind came to collect it.
One autumn a man came down the wrong side with a boy on his shoulders and no coin, asking after his sister, who had gone up in spring and never come down. The keeper took his sleeve and walked him to the thorn. Low on the bark, where a child could reach, ran a row of small scratched marks, each one a day she had counted while she waited for him to come looking. He put his thumb to them one by one, and his lips moved, and he did not say a word.
At the top of the row, higher than any traveller had tied, hung a bow gone white with frost, its tail still pointing down the valley. She had tied it for him before he ever set out, and the wind had kept it all this while.
